Getting married in Halen

In Halen, civil weddings take place in the town hall on the Markt (Markt 14). It stands where the town's cloth hall stood in the Middle Ages.

You can marry on weekdays, during and after office hours, and on Saturdays. There are no weddings on Sundays or public holidays. You give notice of marriage no earlier than six months and no later than 14 days before the date, at the civil affairs department (Burgerzaken) of the municipality where one of you lives. In Halen, that department always works by appointment. The wedding can take place at the earliest 14 days and at the latest six months after the notice.

Witnesses are optional: each of you may name up to two. A witness must be an adult but need not be a relative. The civil wedding always comes before any religious ceremony.

Halen is a town of just over 9,000 people in Limburg, on the border between Haspengouw and the Hageland. Besides the centre, it includes Loksbergen and Zelem and the village of Zelk. The Gete and the Demer meet here, and the landscape has low hills of up to about 80 metres. The Markt is a well-preserved rectangular square with several fine historic buildings. In 1914 the Battle of the Silver Helmets was fought near Halen; a museum keeps its memory alive. The town lies on the road from Diest to Hasselt.
