Getting married in Aarschot

In Aarschot, civil weddings take place at the town hall, Ten Drossaarde 1.

You can marry on a working day during office hours, or on a Saturday or a bridge day (a working day between a public holiday and the weekend). You give notice of marriage no earlier than six months and no later than 14 days before the date, at the civil registry counter of the municipality where one of you lives. You go together, or one of you goes with a proxy from the other. Aarschot town hall works by appointment. The wedding can take place at the earliest 14 days and at the latest six months after the notice.

Witnesses are no longer required. If you want them, each of you may name up to two; a witness must be at least 18 but need not be a relative. Both of you bring your identity card. The civil wedding always comes before any religious ceremony.

Aarschot is a town of about 32,000 people in Flemish Brabant, on the Demer, where the Kempen meets the Hageland. Gelrode, Langdorp and Rillaar are part of it too. The skyline is dominated by the Church of Our Lady, a Gothic church in brown ironstone with an 84-metre tower. On the Demer stand the 's Hertogenmolens, mills from the 16th century, and the centre has a restored beguinage. Aarschot station is on the railway line between Leuven and Hasselt, and the town has its own exit on the E314.
